Each year brings new needs, brush in spring, snow in winter, and the Village is here to support you through them. This page explains pickup schedules, seasonal reminders, and what to expect from public works throughout the year.
Brush and Leaf Removal
Spring and Fall Brush Pick-Up
Brush pickup happens once in the spring and once in the fall. Please place brush at the curb no later than the last Monday in April for spring pickup and the last Monday in October for fall pickup. Additional pickups may be scheduled if a storm causes significant debris.
Monday Leaf Pick-Up
From March through November, weather permitting, the Village of Shelby collects leaves every Monday.
To use this service:
- Place your leaves in compostable yard waste bags (no more than 30 pounds each)
- Set bags at the curb for pickup
- Each household may receive 12 free brown compostable bags per year
- Bags can be picked up at Village Hall with proof of residency (a driver’s license or water bill)
- Extra compostable bags are available at the Village Hall for $0.50 each
- We will also pick up small brush that is bundled, tied, and in lengths of no more than four feet
Leaf and Brush Procedures
Drop-Off Site Days and Hours
- Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 12:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.
- NO GARBAGE or BUILDING MATERIALS
- Violators will be held responsible
- This site is closed during the winter and when brush is being burned down
Snow Removal
The Shelby Department of Public Works (DPW) is responsible for clearing Village streets and public parking lots. During snow events, the DPW focuses on major roads and steep hills first, followed by residential streets, downtown parking areas, and sidewalks.

Please remember:
According to Village Ordinance 430.26, it is the responsibility of property owners and businesses to keep their sidewalks clear of snow, ice, obstructions, and other hazards.
Snow removal for highways and major roads like US-31, Shelby Road, and Oceana Drive (outside the Village limits) is handled by the Oceana County Road Commission.
