One of the Dirtiest Jobs in around – A Huge Thank You to Our Shelby DPW Crew!

June 18th, 2025
Every five years or so, our sewer ponds need some serious maintenance—and it’s not for the faint of heart. Our incredible Department of Public Works (DPW) team takes on one of the dirtiest jobs around: replacing the sewer pond diffusors.
Here’s three pictures of what that looks like:
  • 🛶 They head out on a pontoon boat floating on liquid sewage
  • 🧤 Wearing long rubber gloves up to their armpits, they reach into the muck
  • 🔧 They pull out and replace each metal diffusor—about 100 in total
  • ⏱️ It’s a long, grueling, and incredibly important task
And that’s not all. Occasionally, our sewer lift stations get clogged with things that should never go down the drain—wet wipes, towels, washcloths, even pieces of wood (yes, really!). You can see some of this also in the photos attached.
💪 Massive credit to our DPW team for doing the dirty work that keeps our community running smoothly.
📢 Public Service Reminder: Please be mindful of what goes down your sinks and toilets. If it’s not toilet paper or waste, it doesn’t belong there!
Let’s all do our part to make their job a little easier. 🙌
