Grant Application Submitted!

June 19th, 2025
Yesterday, we officially submitted our application for up to $945,000 through the Michigan Department of Transportation Safe Routes to School grant! If awarded, this funding will support the installation of new sidewalks and flashing beacon crosswalks along Sixth St. and State St.—a huge step toward safer routes for our students and community. 🏫🚶‍♀️🚸 It will also cover the cost of programming that will help educate students on safe habits when walking to and from school.

This milestone wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible collaboration and dedication of so many. A heartfelt thank you to the key contributors Mark and Joanie at Shelby Public Schools, Cat and Kylie at REACH, Colleen at Safe Routes to School, and Don at Fleis & Vandenbrink. Your hard work and commitment made this all come together.

To everyone who contributed—whether big or small—your support truly made a difference. 💙

📎 For those interested, here is a picture of the sketch outlining our project priorities. The engineers at MDOT might require some adjustments based on their engineering study and The Village might make some adjustments based on public feedback but take a look and see what we’ve been working toward. Fingers crossed that we are awarded the grant!
