Downtown Vision and Implementation Team Updates

• Conducted an activity determining the purpose of our team. After splitting up intthree groups and then coming back together the following items rose tthe top:
  • More affordable
  • More parking
  • Beautifying Shelby
  • Bringing more businesses tthe downtown area
  • Instill more pride in Shelby
  • Bringing more people downtown
  • Improve communication and connectivity
  • Address walkability and wayfinding
• A small group from the team is going to narrow the preceding list into a concise statement.
• The meeting cadence of the Shelby Downtown Vision and Implementation Team was determined to be quarterly on the third Friday at 9am – January, April, July, October
• The team reviewed the purpose and strategic activities of each emphasis group.
  • Fundraise – Raise the funds to implement the precise vision.
  • Downtown Refurbish – Lead and oversee the downtown renovation plan, which includes:
    • Hosting community input forums tgather residents’ visions for downtown Shelby.
    • Creating foundational pieces for a concise vision of downtown.
    • Selecting an engineering design company after interviewing at least three candidates.
    • Supervising the creation of the design and making necessary adjustments.
    • Developing a funding strategy in partnership with the fundraising group.
    • Executing the construction.
    • Ensuring follow-through on all aspects of the plan.
  • Aesthetics – Coordinate the planting of annual flowers downtown, design fall decorations, and provide input on pole banners and Christmas decor. Organize and lead volunteers for spring and fall cleanup, planting, and decorating, ensuring the area is weeded and watered. Plan and implement other actions that aim tmake downtown look attractive and welcoming.
  • Marketing – Focus on branding and promoting Shelby.
  • Events – Event planning in conjunction and cooperation with the events that already take place.
  • Development – Work teliminate development barriers, identify housing development sites, incentives, processes, and reviews zoning language tpromote attract housing and commercial development while maintaining the aim for Shelby tbe safe and appealing.
  • Community Engagement – Foster connections and enhance community involvement by organizing and promoting local events. This committee serves as a bridge between the community and various activities, ensuring that residents are informed and encouraged tparticipate in events that enrich their lives and strengthen community bonds.
