The Village of Shelby is placing a renewed focus on code enforcement to help enhance the appeal and upkeep of our community.
Code enforcement plays a vital role in preserving our community standards, which are guided by the General Code, the International Property Maintenance Code, and the Uniform Traffic Code.
We’re using a variety of outreach methods to connect with residents, including door hangers, personal visits, phone calls, flyers, pamphlets, written notices, and advisories. These efforts are not meant to be punitive—they’re simply intended to inform residents about potential issues they may not be aware of. Our philosophy is to assume someone doesn’t know until we’re sure they do.
When we’ve made every effort to share the necessary information and a property still remains out of compliance, we may then move forward with formal enforcement through citations, abatement, and the pursuit of court orders.
We acknowledge that there are some people who it makes a hardship for them to keep up on their house because of their financial condition or their physical condition which may be the cause for the neglect of their home. On the other hand, there is still a standard that must be upheld in the way that properties are maintained. It creates a tension and complexity that we, as Village staff, navigate through.
The fact is our entire community has a part in improving the standard of maintenance and appeal.
